Summer is the time to get out and enjoy the Hauraki Gulf
Take a look at 4 Islands that I love to visit and that are perfect for day trips in the Hauraki Gulf. All 4 of these Islands are only a short ride by Ferry.
I love this Island, I have many childhood memories from visiting Kawau Island as it was often the choice for picnic stops while we were boating in the Hauraki Gulf. You can easily grab a Ferry from Sandspit and it only takes about 20 mins across, give or take depending on scheduled stops in the many scenic bays along the way. Many people go across to Mansion House Bay. The bay is usually sheltered and is the perfect place for a picnic lunch. Visit and enjoy the grounds of Mansion House. You can find out more and check out the Ferry here.
Tiritiri Matangi Island
This is a fun day trip for the family. An easy ferry ride away. You can enjoy walking in the cool of the bush while you stop often to listen and spot a variety of native birds. This Island is a success story of how we can recreate a natural nature haven. You can organize for a guide to help you with bird spotting or walk the trails yourself. The lighthouse at the top of the Island is the perfect place for views and a picnic. A great family day out. You can find out more about visiting Tiritiri Matangi Island more here.
Waiheke Island is different from the other 3 Islands on this post as there are many baches and houses and also roads and cars, but don’t rule out this Island for a fun day trip. You can enjoy walking, sea views, swimming and best of all, there are many vineyards where you can enjoy wine, relax and eat great food. Check out the main shops and cafes and visit the local art crafts and galleries. All an easy ferry ride away. Family day or fun with friends. you can easily take your car to Waiheke and also Waiheke holiday homes make it easy to find accommodation. Find out more on Waiheke Island here.
This is a day trip with a difference. You will enjoy a day trip to Rangitoto Island if you love Nature and like to walk. Rangitoto is a volcanic island and you will see lots of black volcanic rock on your trail. Uphill on the way but moderate fitness can easily enjoy this walk. You can stop to enjoy views of the Hauraki Gulf along the way. Venture off the track to the summit and check out some caves. You can also enjoy a picnic at the top with magic views across to Auckland City. The ferry leaves from Auckland. Find out more about Rangitoto Island Here
