Would you like the beach to yourself?
This may not be the lap of luxury but if you love nature then you will love this Kiwi beach stay.
I thought this wet winters day was perfect for writing up my New Years stay at Big Bay. Located at the Mahurangi Heads, North Auckland.
This is another by private boat access or otherwise, I guess the Water Taxi’s at Sandspit would be a way of getting there also. Big Bay is located at the Mahurangi River Head and this makes it easy to access by boat from either Scotts Landing or Martins Bay.
I was invited to join my brothers family for New Years at the Big Bay as they had booked the bach for a week. Naturally, I jumped at the chance and with my camera in tow headed out for the pick up at Scott’s Landing. Having never been there before I was not sure what to expect but I had heard about the bach in the bay and hoped one day I would get to check it out.
What is Big Bay Like?
Big Bay was breathtaking and the perfect place for a Kiwi beach stay. As we turned around the point. The day was amazing with summer now in full swing and I could see the family playing on the beach ready to greet us. The bay stays at good boat mooring death and is also often sheltered so you get visitors throughout the day yachts come in and moor at night when the sea is rough too.
With a great beach to explore and also walks upon the ridge overlooking the bay, I was instantly out walking and checking the place out. The little bach sitting just off the beach was a picture. My brother had spent some time creating a seat and bar for New Years on the beach. I think remnants for one had been there already and he used that for the foundation of this great beach creation.
Check some photos out.
What a great way to almost step off the grid and practically have your very own beach for a family summer holiday.
Here is the thing, The bach has everything beds/bunks, oven plates etc. The only thing missing is a bathroom. There is a long drop out the back door. But if you love sand and sea and all things nature then you will jump the sea and won’t care about having a hot shower.
