Day Trip North Auckland,  Hauraki Gulf Island NZ

Day Out Tiritiri Matangi Island A Bird Sanctuary.

Tiritiri Matangi Island A bird sanctuary to be proud of.

A day trip to Tiritiri Island is my top choice for a day out in the Hauraki Gulf. You get to enjoy the Hauraki Gulf. Have fun spotting birds while enjoying the bush. A great family day out.

Many New Zealanders are keen to put time and effort into conservation and
regenerating forests, saving our native birds and animals from extinction. This Island in the Hauraki Gulf is a great success story. The bird song greets you as you step off the ferry.

I was lucky enough recently to spend a wonderful day on Tiritiri Matangi Island.

My First Visit to Tiritiri Island Many Years Ago.

My first visit to Tiritiri was when I was just a kid. I remember walking up over the farmland to get to the Lighthouse. It was great to have the chance to revisit the Island again. I was blown away by the change and how beautiful now. Walking through the Native bush tracks and stopping to admire and listen to the many native birds. The Island goes on the must-do list for anyone that has the chance.

Don’t Forget Your Camera.

You can leave from Auckland or Whangaparaoa.

We took the Tiri Kat from Gulf Harbour Whangaparaoa. Once on the ferry, it is a quick trip from Whangaparaoa. You are soon ready to start walking and to explore Island. You have the option of a guide through the bush tracks. Or to make our own way up to the lighthouse. Having a guide is the best way to make the most from the experience. It is good to have help to identify the bird species. and their calls.

What you will get to enjoy.

Ferry Ride in the Hauraki Gulf
Bird Song,
Native Plants
and Beautiful Views.

The birds that I got to see were Bellbirds, Whitehead, Tui’s, Wood Pigeon, Riflemen, and Takahe, There is quite a variety of birds that have been taken to the Island and so it really is a bird watchers paradise.

Once you have enjoyed the shade of the bush on a hot summer day and you have made your way to the top then it is time to enjoy a picnic lunch and to take in the views of the Hauraki Gulf.

A great day out.
